The Panhandle Pizza Company(Western Addition) At first glance, this discreet closet of a restaurant, with its
plastic wineglasses and no-frills ambience, screams utterly old-school pizza joint. But unsuspecting traditionalists are
sure to be perplexed by the pies here, which are about as far from doughy disks covered with drippy cheese and ho-hum toppings
as this neighborhood is from becoming Marina trendy. The departure starts with the cornmeal crust, which is neither thick nor
thin, nor remotely gummy. Its mild grittiness scores points, as do the avantgarde toppings starring in the house specialities.
The Pesto comes with al dente broccoli florets, fire-roasted red pepper, tomoto, roasted garlic, and a cilantro pesto. One
could get hooked on the Greek, a palatable mix of marinated eggplant, olives, red onion, spinach, and feta, acccentuated by the
crunch of walnuts. Tack on excellent prices, friendly service, and one of the quietest places to munch in San Francisco and
it's fair to count Panhandle among the best.
