On September 12, 1918, John Max was 43 years old and working as a farmer in Clear Lake, Sherburne, Minnesota. He was a short man with a medium build and had dark brown hair and blue eyes [Source: WWI Draft Registration Card, Sherburne County, Minnesota; Roll 1682641, Draft Board 0].
 
At the time of the 1920 census, Max J. was 45 years old and living with his wife Hattie B. and their five children on the family farm in Clear Lake, Sherburne county, Minnesota. Max was working as a farmer in general farming. [Source: NA Film No. T625-861, p. 18B].
 
In the April 12, 1930 census, Max was 55 years old and living with his wife Hattie and three children on a rented farm in Clear Lake township. The family did not own a radio. Daughter Hattie M. and son Max were attending school. Max stated that he was married when he was 27 and Hattie was 22 years old. He said he was born in Minnesota, his father was born in Germany and his mother was born in France [Source: 1930 Census, Clear Lake, Sherburne, MN, Roll T626-1129, p. 4A, E.D. 8].
 
Max's usual residence was 247 So. 13th Ave. in St. Cloud, MN. However, the last three weeks of his life he moved to the Madden Rest Home in South Haven, Wright County, MN. It was there that he died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 5:35 a.m. on May 21, 1959. He was 84 years old. [Source: Minnesota Certificate of Death No. 13261 (1959)]
